Hey Guys,
I am starting to get my emails about what is allowed and what isn't at the convention regarding weapons. We in the Security Team have been working on a revamp of all the rules and information to keep up with the constantly changing laws, as well as to modify things as we see a need to do so based on our prior years. So without further ado I give you the 2012 Weapons Policy
Allowed / Forbidden List
Permitted weapons/props:
All fake, prop, or homemade weapons are permitted if they are in no way dangerous to attendees.
Sufficiently blunt wooden staves, bo sticks, boken, shinai, and swords are permitted.
Bullwhips and other stock whips are permitted provided they are rolled and secured, ideally by
peace bonding, and remain that way during the convention.
Live steel, e.g. swords or knives, is permitted provided the item can be secured in a sheath, ideally
by peace bonding, and it is not removed at any point during the convention.
Replicas of live firearms provided they are easily identifiable as props, e.g. an orange tipped barrel,
and are peace bonded.
Prohibited weapons:
Live firearms of any kind.
Live steel that cannot be secured in a sheath.
Projectile weapons. Examples of projectile weapons include, but are not limited to, pellet guns, BB
guns, air guns, crossbows, dart guns, Nerf and blowguns. Exceptions may be made for non-live
guns that are not loaded and can be disabled by convention security, ideally by peace bonding.
Flail weapons that cannot be secured.
Incendiary devices. All devices which spark, shoot flame, burn, smolder, or can otherwise cause
combustion or which exist for no purpose other than to be lit with a combustion device.
Illegal weapons are prohibited. Attendees found to be carrying illegal weapons will be immediately
reported to the authorities.
Self-defense weapons. Examples of self-defense weapons include, but are not limited to:
spray, mace, stun guns and tasers.
Flail weapons, e.g. Nunchaku, are not permitted per Arizona Revised Statue 13-3101 Section A,
Paragraph 8, Sub-Section a, Part v. Quote: "Prohibited weapon": - Includes the following: - An
instrument, including a nunchaku, that consists of two or more sticks, clubs, bars or rods to be
used as handles, connected by a rope, cord, wire or chain, in the design of a weapon used in
connection with the practice of a system of self-defense."

Since this has been deemed illegal by the state, we will observe and enforce the local statute
No Wooden or Aluminum baseball bats are permitted in convention space. Foam or Nerf bats are
permitted.
Other examples of prohibited items are: skateboards, golf clubs, paddles, and signs that are
*NOT* integral to the costume
Obviously this is not a comprehensive list by any means, but it does give you a good idea of what can and cannot be brought into the convention. If you have any questions about something not mentioned please feel free to email me at Security@Con-Nichiwa.com.
